The Birth of Imam Mahdi <\/strong>from the Viewpoint of Sunni Scholars<\/strong><\/h1>\n

(1) Muhammad bin Talhah Sh\u0101fe’\u012b writes, \u201cAbu al-Q\u0101sim Muhammad bin al-Hassan (Imam Mahdi) was born in the year 258 A.H. (873 A.D.) in Samarra. His father’s name was Hassan. Among the titles [of this last Imam] are al-Hujjah (a proof from Allah), al-Khalaf al-S\u0101lih (the righteous offspring) and al-Muntazhar (the awaited one).\u201d Following this statement, he has related several traditions on the subject of Mahdi, and concluded his statement by saying, \u201cThese hadith-reports confirm the existence of Imam Hassan al-‘Askar\u012b’s son, who is in concealment and will appear later.” (Mat\u0101lib al-Su\u2019\u00fcl (1287 A.H. edition), p. 89).<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the widely related and authentic traditions narrated from the Prophet, all Islamic scholars, whether Shiite or Sunni, are unanimous in believing that Imam Mahdi will indeed appear, reform the world and destroy all forms of oppression. Hence, all Muslims have faith in it and consider it to be an inseparable part of their religion. Yet, All Shiite scholars, without any exception, believe that Imam Mahdi has already been born and is living in the present time. But, many Sunni scholars say that he shall be born in the future. However, some of them have related the event of the birth of Imam Mahdi in their books. For instance:<\/span><\/p>\n

(2) Muhammad bin Y\u016bsuf, following his entry on the death of Imam Hassan al-‘Askar\u012b, says, \u201cHe did not have any child except Muhammad. It is said that he is the same as the Awaited Imam (whose title is Mahdi).\u201d (Kif\u0101yat al-T\u0101lib, p. 312).<\/span><\/p>\n

(Sab\u0101ik al-Dhahab, p. 78).<\/i><\/strong><\/h3>\n

(3) Ibn Sabb\u0101gh M\u0101liki writes, \u201cSection Twelve, on the life of Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim Muhammad, al-Hujjah, al-Khalaf al-S\u0101lih, the son of Ab\u016b Muhammad al-Hassan (the eleventh Imam). He is the twelfth Imam of the Shia.\u201d Then he records the history of the Imam and relates some traditions about him. (Al-Fus\u016bl al-Muhimmah (Second edition), p. 273 and 286).<\/span><\/p>\n

(8) M\u012br Khawand writes, \u201cMuhammad was the son of Hassan. His cognomen is Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim. The Imamiyyah acknowledge that he is the Hujjah, the Q\u0101im, and the Mahdi.\u201d (Rawd\u0101t al-Saf\u0101, vol. 3, p. 143).<\/span><\/p>\n

(4) Sibt bin J\u016bz\u012b, after writing his account about the life of Imam Hassan al-`Askar\u012b, says, \u201cHis son’s name is Muhammad, and his patronymic is Abu `Abdullah and Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim. He is the Proof of Allah’s existence, the Master of the Age, the Q\u0101im, and the Muntazhar. The Imamate has come to an end with him.\u201d (Tadhkirah Khaw\u0101s al-Ummah, p. 363).<\/span><\/p>\n

(9) Sha\u2019r\u0101n\u012b says, \u201cMahdi is the son of Imam Hassan al-‘Askar\u012b. He was born on the fifteenth night of Sha’b\u0101n, 255 A.H. He is alive and will remain so until he will emerge with Jesus. Now it is 957 A.H. He is, thus, 703 years old.\u201d (Al-Yaw\u0101q\u012bt wa al-Jaw\u0101hir (1351 A.H. edition), vol. 2, p. 143).<\/span><\/p>\n

(5) Shablanj\u012b in the book entitled N\u00fcr al-Abs\u0101r, writes, \u201cMuhammad is the son of Hassan al-‘Askar\u012b. His mother was a slave-girl by the name of Narjis. His cognomen is Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim. The Twelver Shia knows him as al-Hujjah, al-Mahdi, al-Khalaf al-S\u0101lih, alQ\u0101im, al-Muntazar, and the Master of the Age…\u201d (N\u00fcr al-Abs\u0101r (Cairo edition), p. 342).<\/span><\/p>\n

(10) Sha\u2018r\u0101n\u012b, quoting Ibn ‘Arab\u012b\u2019s Fut\u016bh\u0101t Makk\u012byyah, section 366, writes, \u201cWhen the earth will be filled with tyranny and injustice, Mahdi will rise and will fill the earth with justice and equity. He is one of the descendants of the Prophet and from the line of Fatima. He is from the descendants of Imam Hussain, and his father is Imam Hassan al-`Askar\u012b,…” (Al-Yaw\u0101q\u012bt wa al-Jaw\u0101hir (1351 A.H. edition), vol. 2, p. 143).<\/span><\/p>\n

(6) Ibn Hajar, following the biography of Imam Hassan al-‘Askar\u012b, writes, \u201cHe has not left a son except Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim, who is known as Muhammad and al-Hujjah. That boy was five years old when his father passed away.\u201d (Al-Saw\u0101iq al-Muhriqah, p. 206).<\/span><\/p>\n

(11) Kh\u0101jah Pars\u0101 in his book Fasl al-Khit\u0101b writes: \u201cMuhammad, the son of Hassan al-Askar\u012b, was born on the fifteenth night of Sha’b\u0101n, 255 A.H. (870 A.D.) His mother’s name was Narjis. His father passed away when he was five years of age. From that time until now he is in occultation. He is the awaited Imam of the Shia. His existence is well accepted among his companions, trusted associates, and family…\u201d (As cited in Yan\u0101b\u012b\u2019al-Mawaddah, vol. 2, p. 126).<\/span><\/p>\n

(7) MuhammadAmin al-Baghd\u0101d\u012bwrites, \u201cMuhammad, whois also known as Mahdi, was fiveyears old at the time of his father’s demise.”<\/span><\/p>\n

(12) Ab\u016b al-Fall\u0101h al-Hanbal\u012b says, \u201cMuhammad is the son of Hassan al-`Askar\u012b… His cognomen is Ab\u016b al-Q\u0101sim and the Shia knows him as al-Khalaf al-S\u0101lih, al-Hujjah, al-Mahdi, alMuntazhar, and S\u0101hib al-Zam\u0101n (the Master of the Age.)\u201d (Shazar\u0101t al-Zahab (Beirut edition) vol. 2, p. 141).<\/span><\/p>\n

(13) Muhammad bin `Ali al-Hamaw says, \u201cAb\u016b al-Q\u0101sim Muhammad al-Muntazhar was born in the year 259 A.H. (874 A.D) in Samarra.\u201d (T\u0101\u2019rikh mans\u016br\u012b, a microfilm copy of the Moscow manuscript folio number 114).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In short, besides all these above mentioned Sunni scholars numerous others have recorded the birth of Imam Hassan al-Askari’s son. What is important is that many of them confess that the cognomen or the title of the mentioned son is Mahdi. Add to it that many of them confess that he is the Promised Savior who will emerge in a day. (See the references compiled in Kashf al-Ast\u0101r by Hussain bin Muhammad Taq\u012b al- N\u016br\u012b and Kif\u0101yat al-muwahhid\u012bn by Tabars\u012b, especially volume 2).<\/span><\/p>\n
